3 Ways To Save Money When Moving

Moving to a new home or apartment costs money beyond putting down a security deposit on a new place. Moving all of your stuff requires purchasing moving supplies and hiring movers. If you find yourself operating on a tight budget, there are ways to save money on your move.

Move During the Week

When you book a moving company, one of the factors that will impact the cost is the day of the week that you are moving. Generally, moving on the weekends will cost more than moving during the middle of the week, due to the bigger demand for weekend movers.

Talk to the moving company you want to work with and see if they charge lower rates for moving Monday to Thursday. If they do, it may be worth taking a day off work to move during the week so you can enjoy lower moving rates.

Also, the time of year can impact the cost of your move as well. The peak moving season, which tends to go from late spring through early fall, may be more costly than moving during the non-peak season.

Get Rid of What You Don't Need

When you move, you are charged for the time and space it takes to move all of your stuff. Depending on the moving method you are using, you may be charged for the weight of your stuff as well.

It doesn't make sense to move items you don't need or use. The less stuff you have to move, the more money you will save. Go through your house and determine what furniture you don't use or want anymore, and work to get rid of that before you move. Furniture tends to be big, bulky, and heavy, and getting rid of furniture you don't want in your new home will help reduce your moving costs.

Give yourself some time to sell the items or have someone pick them up for donation.

Get Creative with Moving Boxes

You don't need to go and buy all new moving boxes. Save up boxes for a few months from packages you have delivered to your house and ask your friends to do the same. These are generally high-quality packages that can be reused.

Most workplaces get boxes of different supplies; ask your workplace to save the boxes over the week and take the boxes home at the end of each week. There are many places you can secure boxes from without having to buy your entire supply of moving boxes.

You can save money on your moving costs by moving during the week, getting rid of what you don't need, and getting creative with acquiring moving boxes for your move. Contact a local moving company to learn more.
